Do you know what today is?
Today is unique. You’ve never had it before and you will never know it today.
One of the most important aspects about today is knowing what day it is. (See: A Secret About Today Which Could Change Everything)
My kids are of an age in which they will play dress up out of our closet. My son will put on my shoes and hat; my daughter will put on Jenny’s high heels and scarf. They will saunter around the house pretending to be us.
It’s cute when they play dress up, but it wouldn’t be so cute if I did. It’s okay for children to play dress up; it’s not okay for adults to do.
In order to know what we should do today, we need to know what day it is. Not every day is the same. (See: How to Determine What to Do at Work, in Marriage, in Life)
Based on your chronological age, your responsibilities and commitments, today is unique. What you should do and how you should live is somewhat dependent on what day it is for you.
One of the most common problems in today’s society is people who are not living based on today.
- the 12-year-old girl who dresses as though she is 18
- the married man still living as though he is single
- the elderly woman refusing to realize it’s time to give up the car keys
There is a day to dress as though you are 18 or to live as though you are single or to drive, but there are days in which you shouldn’t. Foolishness is trying to live today as though it is yesterday or tomorrow.
One of the wisest actions we can take is to consider what day it is and to live according to that day.
Yet too many people aren’t willing to live today. They are still living in yesterday or are trying to rush tomorrow. Either is a denial of today. Either is foolish.
Wisdom is the ability to understand how today is unique compared to yesterday and tomorrow and choosing to live today.
For some, today is a day to pay your dues. For others, it’s a day to reap what you’ve sown.
For some, it’s a day to ignore your dreams and to stay home to raise kids. For others, it’s a day to let nothing stand in the way of your dreams.
For some, it’s a day to enjoy being a child and let your parents worry about everything. For others, it’s a day to grow up and be your own man.
Failing to live in our proper day can have disastrous consequences.
It destroys families. Men and women refuse the responsibilities of marriage or parenthood and make foolish choices. Their decisions would be fine if they weren’t married or if they didn’t have kids, but with a family they are horrific decisions.
It destroys businesses. Too many never change and are shocked when what worked yesterday doesn’t work today. Others try to rush growth and extend themselves beyond their resources. Either choice can destroy a company.
It destroys individuals. Living the wrong day causes some to grow up too fast and others to never grow up.
Families, organizations, and individuals all have to ask “What day is it?” before they can figure out the answer to the more prevalent question of “What should I do?” (See: What To Do When You Don’t Have a Clue)
Take a look around. It’s easy to see. Far too many people are not living today. Individuals, businesses, and communities are suffering because of it.
It’s Monday. What Monday is it for you? Figure out the day and you will figure out what you should do.
